Himalaya - Nepalese Cuisine
Sunday, July 19, 2009 at 10:49 AM On Saturday I met up with notable bloggers from the South of the peninsula, Dave in Daegu of Staypuff.net fame, and Aaron in Andong (Now Waegook in Wongju) for dinner, the occasion being Dave's Parent's visiting The Republic.
Dave doesn't eat the pork, and I am continuing to lessen the beef intake - should it be sourced from the US - so a suitable dining establishment was required in the Dongdaemun type area catering to both these requirements.
Luckily Jen was able to recommend Himalaya, a Nepalese / South Asian restaurant at Dongmyo Station just up from Dongdaemun Station:
South Asian food (인도음식 - or literally Indian food) is gaining more and more of a following hre in Korea of late but has been a part of the Korean food scene for some time due to the large migrant worker community. While this as spawned more uniform type establishments like Gangja and Bombay in Gangnam, Himalaya is a little more old school, having been around for a long time, staffed by South Asians and a reflection of the number of migrant workers in the Dongdaemun.
The décor adds a nice atmosphere along with the Bollywood soundtrack playing in the background. Had there been IPL coverage on the TV we could ave been sitting anywhere on The Sub-Continent.

Everyone was particularly impressed with the size of the Nan. (No that's not a euphemism)
Dave and I both chose the Taj Mahal set - or as Dave put it - a bit of everything for those of us who can't make up their mind:
Nom, nom, nom.
It was bloody good.
Himalaya is literally right next to Exit 8 of Dongmyo-Ap Station on Line 6 / Line 1. Prices are reasonable too - with the Taj Mahal set costing ₩18000.
