Mapo Jeong Daepo 마포 정 대포
Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 7:22 PM On Saturday I met up with Yuni, Zach and Joe for some dinner in Mapo at 마포 정 대포. The occasion? Joe was whoring himself on TV again featured on Arirang's "My Blog" program, which looks at blogger in Korea.
While it was a bit disconcerting having a camera pushed in your face asking for comments about Korean food, "Jeong", and "서비스" the meal was fantastic.

Everyone has one camera or another.
The scene inside 마포 정 대포. Saturday night and the place was going off! And no surprises why (The food is glorious!) 마포 정 대포 is a pretty basic place, but family friendly and far from pretentious.
And there it is, laid out in front of us and starting to cook.
At one point the conversation turned to the fact that in Seoul, and in Korea in general there are lots of little pockets, or areas that specialize in one product or dish. Often you hear of The Galbi Street or think about how Chungmuro has a Camera Street. (Area) And how do all these establishments - essentially selling the same goods, survive so close to each other?
The answer is that every restaurant has its own eccentricities and its own "specialities". In the case of 마포 정 대포 it's the egg dish served with your meat:
The drip tray around the grill plate is stuffed with Kimchi, greens, and garlic before egg is poured in. The fat from the meat drains down into the egg while it cooks making the most delicious omelet to accompany your barbecued dead animal.
Mmmmmmm!
Afterwards, trying to avoid the oppressive heat and humidity we finished our meal down the road with Nangmyeon (Buckwheat Noodles in an iced beefy broth)
Washed down wit some Makkoli made from Buckwheat flowers:
메밀 (Buckwheat) 꽃 (flower) 술 (Alcohol). And by all accounts a specialty of Gangwon-Do.
'Twas a good evening eating, meeting new people and drinking far too much Makkoli! Thanks to Joe for the invitation, and if The Chosun Bimbo makes the final cut look for My Blog on Arirang TV (If I get the vid I'll post it here.)
